Improving IGM temperature constraints using wavelet analysis on high-redshift quasars

چکیده
The thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) contains vital information about epoch reionization, one most transformative yet poorly understood periods in young universe. This is encoded small-scale structure Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) absorption quasar spectra. 1D flux power spectrum measures average along sightlines. At high redshifts, where opacity large, averaging mixes signal-to-noise ratio transmission spikes with noisy troughs. Wavelet amplitudes are an alternate statistic that maintains spatial while quantifying fluctuations at same frequencies as spectrum, giving them potential to more sensitively measure structure. Previous Ly$\alpha$ forest studies using wavelet amplitude probability density functions (PDFs) used limited and neglected strong correlations between PDF bins across wavelets scales, resulting sub-optimal unreliable parameter inference. Here we present a novel method for performing statistical inference PDFs spans full range probed by fully accounts these correlations. We applied this procedure realistic mock data drawn from simple model parameterized temperature mean density, $T_0$, find deliver 1$\sigma$ constraints on $T_0$ 7% sensitive $z=5$ (12% $z=6$) than those spectrum. consider possibility combing power, but does not lead improved sensitivity.

High - redshift obscured quasars
Using mid-infrared and radio criteria, we select a sample of candidate z ∼ 2 obscured quasars. Optical spectroscopy confirms about half of these as type-2 quasars, and modelling the population suggests 50-80% of the quasars are obscured. We find some flat radio spectrum type-2 quasars, and tentative evidence for obscuration unrelated to the torus. Using a similar sample, we also find evidence f...
متن کاملHigh-Redshift, Radio-Loud Quasars
I discuss two programs to study radio-loud quasars at high (z ∼ > 4) redshift. Quasars are the most luminous, non-transient objects known and are observed to the earliest cosmic epochs. At lower redshifts, radio-loud quasars are associated with host galaxies having de Vaucoleurs profiles. By association, identifying and studying a sample of high-redshift, radio-loud quasars provides important c...
متن کاملHigh redshift quasars and the supermassive black hole mass budget: constraints on quasar formation models
We investigate the constraints on models of supermassive black hole (SMBH) and quasar formation obtainable from two recent observational developments: the discovery of luminous quasars at z ∼ 6, and estimates of the local mass density of SMBHs. If ∼ 90 per cent of this mass was accreted at redshifts z < ∼ 3, as suggested by the observed quasar luminosity functions, these joint constraints pose ...
متن کاملXMM - Newton spectroscopy of high - redshift quasars
XMM-Newton observations of 29 high redshift (z>2) quasars, including seven radio-quiet, 16 radio-loud and six Broad Absorption Line (BAL) objects, are presented; due to the high redshifts, the rest-frame energy bands extend up to ∼ 30–70 keV. Over 2–10 keV, the quasars can be well fitted in each case by a simple power-law, with no strong evidence for iron emission lines. The lack of iron lines ...
